ISS International School (ISS) was founded in 1981. ISS is an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School and offers IB curriculum from Pre-school to Grade 12. ISS is authorized to offer the IB Primary Years Program (IBPYP), the IB Middle Years Program (IBMYP) and the IB Diploma Program (IBDP).[1] ISS is the only school in Singapore and one of the few in the world that uses the IB curriculum as its sole framework, and does not mix and match with other (often conflicting) pedagogues.

ISS is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC)[2] since February 2005, a member of the East Asia Regional Council of Overseas Schools (EARCOS)[3] since 1996 and a Council of International Schools (CIS) member school.[4] It is also recognized by the Ministry of Education (Singapore).

ISS will be preparing for approval for a joint CIS/WASC/IBO Accreditation year in 2011.

Campuses

ISS has two campuses:

Paterson Campus - the Elementary and Middle School is a three-minute walk from Orchard Road on Paterson Road. This campus has facilities such as a hockey/four square court, two basketball courts and a field.

Preston Campus -the High School is located about 10 minutes drive from the Paterson Campus, on top of a hill surrounded by wildlife, including monkeys and snakes. The Preston Campus has two outdoor basketball courts, a fitness centre, three IT labs, science labs, and classrooms.

Academics

ISS is one of Singapore's IB schools. Every semester the student's with the higher grade point averages are given Honor Roll certificates, and their names are put up on the board outside the office.

Field trips

Every year in the Middle School and High school there is an Activity week (see activities), and there are smaller scale field trips throughout the rest of the school year. In elementary school trips to the zoo are taken when studying endangered species. In High school grade 11s take a trip in March for Biology and Environmental Systems, to further their understanding of the subject by being physically involved.

Activities

Athletics

Season one is mainly basketball and football. Season two has badminton, volleyball and rugby, among other sports in both seasons.

Theatre

ISS has a Drama and Theatre program, and students explore Theatre traditions from around the world. The Drama Club and The Theatre Company provide opportunities for students to engage in theatre outside of the classroom, regardless of whether they are formally studying it. At least once a year, students are given the opportunity to work at one of the many professional venues in Singapore, giving them hands on industry experience and the chance to work with professional managers and technicians. The Theatre Company has produced a wide variety of plays. Past productions include plays by John Godber, Arthur Miller, and Dennis Potter, at venues such as The DBS Theatre and The Jubilee Hall.

Activity Week

Every year students have a week of school where they learn a new skill or have an enriching experience overseas or in Singapore, such as scuba diving, biking or hiking, eco innovation, theatre, and video production.

Student government

Student Council (SC), a link from students to teachers. Each homeroom consisting of about 14 students has two representative- a deputy and vice-deputy SC/Homeroom representative. Each week, the representatives meet and discuss issues of schoolwide importance, as well as things like free dress days, dances and Secret Santa activities. However in 2009/2010 the Student Council implemented new events such as the raising of awareness of Peace One Day through a Human Chain activity, Wacky Draw and One Day One Goal Football and UN screening to promote UN night. The SC is led by four main members, the President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer, it is a great opportunity to be involved in your school life, though there are certain controversies regarding the SC.

History

The campus at Preston Road was a military outpost used by the British Army when Singapore was under the British colonial rule.

Accreditations

The school is on the site of the former Alexandra Grammar School which was attended mainly by the children of serving British military personnel serving in Singapore.
